Bring the family for a fun day in the dirt
Placed on Monday, January 18, 2010 by Mollentze, Leonie
Entries are open for South Africa's biggest mountain bike race, the Cape Argus Pick n Pay MTB Challenge. This annual event combines the best in mountain bike racing with good, clean family fun at the Boschendal Wine Estate. The revised format of the MTB Challenge means that the shorter races - the 13km and 26km - will take place on Saturday 6 March, while the longer 35km and 55km will take place on Sunday 7 March. Co-Organiser of the MTB Challenge Meurant Botha explains: "We have changed the format for this year's MTB Challenge somewhat. The Saturday will be more family-focused and is ideal for younger and less experienced riders. The Sunday will be highly competitive, with some of South Africa's most challenging mountain bike routes on offer." Saturday's 13km race is tailored to youngsters, and features additional water stops and a number of volunteers who will be on hand to assist with flat tyres, broken chains or any other hiccups along the way. There will also be jumping castles for kids with simply too much energy to be exhausted by a 13km race. "The race venue is ideal for family picnics. While Junior traverses the 13km beginner's course, Mom, Dad and Gran can relax under the trees with a lovely summer spread. You can even buy some quality South African wine to accompany your picnic at the nearby cellar," says Botha Riders can enter online by visiting www.mtbchallenge.co.za. Entries are limited so enter soonest to avoid disappointment. Participants who complete the 55km MTB Challenge AND the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour will receive a special commemorative medal.
